Centerless Grinder

Job Summary

Sets up and operates one or more centerless grinding machines to grind external cylindrical surfaces of metal work-pieces to blueprint specifications and run thread rolling machines when necessary, following tooling instructions and standard charts and applying knowledge of grinding and thread rolling procedures. The individual must read Router instructions and wand in & out of computer data entry to record labor data.

  • Read and understand all router instructions for each grinding sequence and evaluate production and setup standards immediately after starting and establishing the actual time standards.
  • Report any time standard changes using the “planning change request” form to production control thread roll manager.
  • Follow ERP computer generated Priority Lists for next job priority, run jobs in a Lean thread rolling PULL fashion and inform PC Thread Roll Manager of problems with this list.
  • Reads blueprint and job order for product specifications, such as dimensions, tolerances, and number of parts to be ground, and tooling instructions, such as grinding speeds, feed rates, holding fixtures, and grinding wheels to be used.
  • Mounts grinding wheel and regulating wheel on spindles with wrenches.
  • Dress wheels to specifications, using dressing device.
  • Moves controls to set specified grinding speeds, feed rates, and spacing between wheel faces. Positions and secures work rest at specified height, using wrenches.
  • Lifts and positions work-piece manually or with hoist, and secures it between wheels and on work rest.
  • Starts machine and observe operation.
  • Verifies dimensions of ground work-piece for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, calipers. and preset gauges.
  • Change worn grinding wheels using wrenches.
  • Setup and Run Thread Rolling Machines by cross-training within the cell that you work.
  • Communicates with co workers and supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate activities.
  • Inspects, measures parts and records data to maintain statistical process control charts.

  • Change coolant oil tanks and remove grinding sludge per approved handling and safety procedures.
  • Keep grinding area clean and free of debris.
  • Organize grinding wheel storage area and keep purchasing informed of wheel and blade needs so as not to interrupt grinding schedule.
  • Maintain 5s work area, practice Lean principles on a daily basis.

Years of Experience: 6 months to 1 year

Type of Experience:

Trade school, vocational education, work experience, or apprenticeship. Required having experience with custom or production work or with particular material, product, or precision level, or with machine of particular size, type, or trade name. Basic training in Lean Manufacturing Principles is preferred.
